8th - Penzance Sun & 19C!!

Postby Graham Easterling » 2012 Oct 08, 12:36

A lovely hole in the dense sea fog affecting most of west Cornwall formed this morning. Spells of sunshine since 09:00. This has pushed the temperature up to 19C!. After the chill wind & cloud of yesterday, the contrast couldn't be greater.

Warmest day for a month (since 19.9 on 9th September) Swirls of fog keep drifting around Penlee point, and around the Mount, really very attractive. The mizzle in the air, plus the sun, has given some good rainbow effects. Most places away from the Newlyn/Penzance sea front are still foggy.

UPDATE 16:00 Still 18C with bursts of sunshine through mainly Ac, Humidity > 80% & calm, feels close & thundery. Interesting 'wave' patterns in the coastal fog patches along the west side of the Lizard. The mount had a nice fog plume at one point. Some fog patches near the Minack drifting up the cliffs near Logan Rock http://www.minack.com/webcams.htm Looking at XCWeather, this very warm air seems to be limited to Cornwall, 16-17C even where it's foggy.

Maximum here of 17.7°C.

We didn't get the sunshine needed to get the temperature up, and it remained cloudy all day apart from a brief 4 minutes of bright sunshine at 15:20.

So it ended up the warmest day since, well, only the 1st of this month. Still, with a DP of >16°C for most of the afternoon it felt fairly warm and humid.

A mild evening and night to come.
(19:25), 15.0°C, RH 96%, DP 14.2°C, 1012 hPa (Rising), Wind 3 mph NNW. Rain last 24 hrs = 5.4 mm.

Reached 17.3C here with no sunshine, fog for most of the day.
If the sun had revealed itself we might have approached an Oct record.
As it was, it got nowhere near the record of 21.7C on 13th Oct 2001.

That got me checking my records. My warmest October day (since 1992) is also 13/10/2001, when it reached 22.1C.

Brief sharp shower here around 17:00.
