First Half of June - Sunny and Warm

Postby Nick Gardner » 2014 Jun 15, 19:11

As with the winter and spring, the warmth continues into summer.

June 1st - 15th:
Mean minimum = 11.0°C
Mean maximum = 20.9°C
Mean = 16.0°C
Rain = 17.2 mm
Sunshine = 108 hours.

It has been warm and fairly sunny since the 5th. The garden plants have gone mad over the last week, particularly the tomatoes, chillies and runners. I should be picking the first toms and chillies before the end of the month and the runners are flowering and have now reached the top of their canes. Picked cherries, strawberries, raspberries and cucumbers today - this is a little earlier than usual and shows just how warm and generally sunny it has been since the start of Spring.

It's been a wonderful spell of weather, if lacking on the surf front. http://www.sennen-cove.com/imjun14.htm In fact, it's now exceptionally calm, Sevenstone's off Land's End only reporting a 1' swell. Attached picture at Sennen, 1 mile from Land's End. No wind as well as no swell.

Aye Graham, it's been wonderful and looks set to continue but we could do with an overnight downpour to water the garden! Everything is now very dry.

Today (18th):
Minimum = 10.7°C (Coolest night since the 13th)
Maximum = 25.5°C (2nd warmest day of the year)
Sunshine = 10.8 hours.
Dewpoint back above 17°C making it feel rather more humid than yesterday.

Only 1 day since the 6th has failed to reach +20°C and that was the 10th with 18.8°C.

It was interesting to see the cumulus clouds moving southwards whilst the wind was coming up from the south (sea breeze). The sea breeze must have been very shallow but it was a reasonably strong one blowing at a consistent 6 mph and gusting up to 17 mph at times.

Fourth day of unbroken sunshine from dawn to dusk has raised the monthly total well past the 200 hours mark. The sunshine total for June now stands at 208.2 hours.

This June is going to end up the sunniest and warmest since the superb June of 2010 which I recorded at my previous place situated about 4 miles up the Otter Valley:

June 2010
Mean minimum: 10.4°C
Mean maximum: 23.5°C
Mean: 17.0°C
Rain: 58.9 mm
Sunshine: 316.3 hours

June 2014 (1st - 23rd):
Mean minimum: 11.3°C
Mean maximum: 22.1°C
Mean: 16.7°C
Rain: 17.6°C
Sunshine: 208.2 hours.

There's no way I am going to beat the sunshine of June 2010 but it certainly could end up drier and maybe a little warmer.

Desperate for a drop of rain in the now browning garden and surrounding countryside.

12th consecutive rainless day here in Farnborough - some browning of grass on the verges. It won't last long though - with heavy showers forecast for Friday and the weekend.
Another warm month - looks like being 7 months in a row with temp>average.
