Penzance - Record dry month on the cards.

Postby Graham Easterling » 2014 Sep 21, 16:00

The driest months in my almost 24 year record are:-
May ' 91 3.0mm
June '96 9.6mm

Driest September 27.6mm in 2001, autumn is much wetter than spring or summer here.

So far just 0.9mm this month, and that all fell on 1st! Little sign of rain in the next few days.

Also my warmest Septembers are:-
1. 2006 - 17.1C (the warmest by a substantial margin)
2. 2004 - 16.4C
This month is currently running at 16.9C, and therefore is almost certain to replace 2004 in 2nd place.

Still 10 days to go yet but it could be a record dry September here as well.

So far only 2.4 mm.

Previous driest months (below 10 mm) since record began in 1985

Sep 2002 4.9 mm
Aug 1995 5.0 mm
May 1991 5.6 mm
May 1989 6.2 mm

September 2002 was followed by a rather wet winter, November was horrendous.

Oct 99.3
Nov 202.6
Dec 149.9
Jan 104.9
Feb 92.8

I had 24.5 mm in 2001 Graham.

There was a run of dry Septembers around that time apart from 2005

2001 24.5
2002 4.9
2003 15.5
2004 35.3

Len, seeing your 2002 figure, I thought I'd better check mine.

The reason for a big difference here was a thunderstorm on 19th, which dropped 26.5mm. Related to a front just off the south coast of Cornwall. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/20 ... 020919.gif

Still quite warm, 19.4C max today (22nd), looks to have been similar where you are.

The thunderstorms in the early hours of the 19th deposited 9.8 mm of rain here, the only rainfall of the month so far.

A colleague today said that he has recorded no rain at all this month and he lives near Barnstaple. Methinks there must be quite a few places in the South West that might end up recording a dry (rainless) month.
