A dry September BUT not the driest

Postby Richard_Griffith » 2014 Oct 01, 09:44

Many will be aware of the reports in the press regarding the dry conditions for September, at my site at Horsham in West Sussex I recorded 18.6mm - 29% of the LTA. Looking at my records from 1983, this September ranked 4th driest - with 2003 recording 11.8mm. Looking at British Rainfall records for the period 1953-2014, for my location this September ranked 8th driest with September 1959 recording only 2.0mm.

So it will be interesting to see how other parts of the country have done, yes it was a dry September but not the driest!

... Using the Hurn (provisional) figure of 22.2 mm for September 2014, you only have to go back to 2003 for a drier September [7.4 mm], which in fact was /the/ driest in their 1957+ series. There were 6 Septembers with lower PPN amounts [ 1959, 1971, 1978, 1979, 1997 & aforementioned 2003 ].

By the (provisional) EWP measure (ex Met O diagnostics site) = ~16 mm, this figure places September 2014 5th in that extended series, with 1959 the driest at 8 mm.

I think this is a case of it being the driest September in some areas but it will be very localised.

I have been told by a few colleagues that live around Devon that they have not recorded any rainfall during this September.

I recorded only one day when rainfall occurred and that was on the 19th with 9.8 mm falling during a thunderstorm. Some areas nearby missed that storm so will likely to have recorded no rainfall at all for the whole month.

6.8mm for September in Penzance, 8% of the 1981-2010 norm (89.0mm). September was the driest of any month since 3.0mm in May 1991.

During the period of my records (1991-2014) the previous driest September was 2001 with 27.6mm.

5.4 mm total for September here in Wembury.
The driest since 2002 when we had 4.9 mm.
Record began 1985.

Looking at the longer record of Plymouth which goes back to 1874,
here are past Septembers with below 10 mm rainfall:

1959 0 mm
2002 3.8 mm
1910 8 mm
1926 9 mm

In Dorchester it was the driest September in local records back to 1896. The total from three raindays was 2.8mm (of which 2.2mm fell in the early hours of Oct 1st) beating the previous record of 3.3mm from one rainday, set in 1959.

Even earlier records from Bridport in the west of the county shows that no rain fell in the whole of September in 1865
