January 2015 - A very mild first half

Postby Nick Gardner » 2015 Jan 15, 20:13

This January has been remarkably mild for the first half:

January 2015 (1st - 15th)
Mean minimum = 5.4°C
Mean maximum = 11.9°C
Mean = 8.7°C
AWS mean (integrated) = 8.7°C
Rainfall = 60.0 mm
Sunshine = 44.4 hours.

Sunshine a little above normal for this time into the month whilst rainfall has been well-above the average.

Given the forecast the second half is likely to be rather colder/different.

Also mild and wet in Farnborough:

1st to 16th
Mean max 10.2C
Mean min 3.0C
Mean 6.6C (+2.1 on the estimated LTA)
Total rain 42.3 mm (around 62% of the estimated LTA for the month).

However, it did fall to -4.1C last night, and this week looks like being cold.
No snow here as yet.

Not so mild now, after the latest cold spell.

For Farnborough:

1st to 24th
Mean max 8.5C (+0.8 on estimated LTA)
Mean min 1.1C (-0.2 on estimated LTA)
Mean 4.8C (+0.3 on the estimated LTA)
Total rain 47.2 mm (around 70% of the estimated LTA for the month).

Although I don't officially measure sunshine, I can see from my estimates and the figures for nearby stations such as Reading University that it is looking like a very sunny January (around 65 hours so far at the university compared to 56.5 LTA for the entire month).

In the end it was very much a month of two different halves.

1-15th; 16th-31st
Mean minimum = 5.4°C; 1.1°C
Mean maximum = 11.9; 8.5°C
Mean = 8.7°C; 4.8°C
Rain = 60.0 mm; 13.2 mm
Sunshine = 44.4 hours; 69.6 hours

First half very mild, wet and around average sunshine; second half cold, dry and rather sunny.

The monthly mean ended up at 6.7°C which is slightly above my very estimated LTA.
