Hi Nick

A miserable end to the month here in Stornoway (with 149.7mm of rain in the final fortnight), marking the end of a diabolical winter (even for Stornoway). Everyone is remarking upon (and thoroughly fed up with) the endless weeks of wind, rain, hail, driving sleet and frequent thunderstorms (not to mention the hurricane of January). Usually a few easterly days can be expected by February (bringing drier offshore conditions) but no such luck this year.

Can't wait for spring!

Data for Stornoway town (Feb 2015):
Mean max: 7.4C
Highest Max: 10.8C on 17th
Lowest Max: 3.3C on 1st
Mean min: 2.8C
Highest Min: 6.8C on 10th
Lowest Min: -1.0C on 22nd
Mean: 5.1C

Diff: +0.85C (1873-2010), +0.45 (based on 03026/SYY, 1981-2010)

Precip: 157.9mm (170% / 146%)
Wettest: 23.2mm on 18th

Lowest grass: -3.5 (2nd)

Thunder 1
Hail 10
Large Hail 1
Snow Fall 11
Snow Lying 4
Grass Frosts 11
Air Frosts 3
Raindays 24
Wetdays 19

Sunshine total (Stornoway Airport 03026) was only 45.3hrs (23% below normal, another very dull month)

This month's photo is from the start of the month (3rd), when there was 2cm snow cover in a northerly airflow. At the time of the photo, the air temp was +3.7C but the dewpoint was -2.4C (rh 65%), so the snow wasn't thawing. Now, my 89-year old next-door neighbour didn't know these facts - but she knew enough to put out her washing -which promptly dried in a brisk dry, northerly breeze!

Eddy, that reminds me of December 2010 and the last time we had snow here.

There were icicles hanging from eaves and it was interesting that even with the sun shining on them and an air temperature of +4C they were not melting and gradually getting longer. The DP was well below freezing due to the very dry Continental air. My neighbour was mystified as to why this was. And then on Boxing Day the temperature rose to +2C and the icicles were gone within an hour (RH 99%). In fact, the snow that had lain on the ground for 10 days disappeared within just a few hours as well. That was the last lying snow I've seen here and the locals claim it was the most snow they've seen since the winter of 1962/63. It might not happen again in my lifetime (hopefully it won't!).
