October 2013 - Rainfall & other events.

Postby Martin Rowley » 2013 Nov 01, 10:40

... interesting month October 2013: with 153.1 mm of rain, the wettest month since December last year. Also, with 38.0 mm between 27/18Z and 28/03Z, the wettest 'standard' rain-day (09-09) since 19th December 2012. Neither data 'record-breaking' [our 5th wettest day since we moved here in the wet summer of 2007 ] but with a dry late spring & all-summer beforehand, emphasises just how 'jumpy' British climate can be.

The month includes two notable events -
(1): on the 22nd, active / multiple CB cells late afternoon-early evening drifting up from the Channel produced a notable C-G strike not far away causing damage/fire in a bungalow (residents away at the time); with another, less active thunder event on the 20th, this brings our total 'thunder-heard' days for the year to 7: still below average (circa 11/12 based on Met Office web climate pages), but at one point it looked as if we were going to be significantly below average.

(2): on the evening/night 27th/28th, the swiftly moving, rapidly deepening depression (associated with the high rainfall noted above), produced a highest gust of 64 knots in the hour to 28/0600Z, which since we moved here in the summer of 2007 is their (and probably our) highest gust observed. Local damage was limited though - larger branches - some minor electricity interruption - but the major problem was probably from the surface water, poor drainage etc., for road/pavement users.
