Final unprecedented winter rainfall total.

Postby IanCurrie » 2014 Mar 05, 23:31

The final total rainfall for the winter of 2013/14 for Coulsdon, only 15 miles from the centre of London, was 589.9mm. The previous wettest for the area was 1914/15 with 505mm and the 3rd wettest 1994/95 with 400mm. So in a period extending back to the 1870s for my area December 2013 was the second wettest at 199.2mm (1914 was the wettest at 233.4mm); January 2014 was the wettest of any month with 235.5mm and February was the 3rd wettest at 155.2mm( the wettest being 1951 with 189mm and 1900 2nd with 158.9mm).

Ian,

That is an amazing total for your part of the world. Here in Elderslie in the West of Scotland my final Winter rainfall total was a record 759mm, though no individual month was the wettest in my 45 year record nor were there any notable falls. It just seemed to rain non stop - on 85 days to be precise!

Yes, it certainly is weird that somewhere in SE England had more winter rain than us in the SW England.
I wonder how often that has happened.

My total of 543.3 mm was a record for winter going back to 1984, but did not beat your 589.9 mm Ian.

Ian, I'm curious regarding the percentage of your average winter rainfall that enormous total represents?
Here it was only the 5th wettest winter on my 37 year record with the total of 432.2mm representing 142% of the 30 year average. The wettest winter on record was 1989/90 with 470.7 mm and even this is only 155% of average.
I read recently that some areas of southern England recorded around 3 times their normal winter rainfall; if the same were to happen here it would require a fall of 910 mm over the three months, something I can barely imagine.

... using the Hurn record, the winter (provisional) total for DJF = 605 mm, which is 243% of the 1981-2010 LTA.

Our own total, not far away, was 607 mm.

243% of the 1981-2010 average is well in excess of the largest positive anomaly I've recorded in a season, namely 192% of the ( same ) 30 year average in autumn 2000 when the rainfall total was 579.8mm.
In fact in a composite record spanning 50 years there have been fewer than 10 calendar months, let alone seasons, with rainfall in excess of 243% of the average.
It does make you wonder what the potential upper limit might be.
