Latest Air Frost

Postby Nick Gardner » 2014 Apr 13, 17:36

This April has so far been frostless and judging by the last air frosts of the season occurring in previous years and given the forecast, there is unlikely to be another air frost until the autumn.

The lastest I have ever recorded an air frost for this location and my previous location up the valley was the 21st April.

Date of last air frost:
2013 21st April (-0.3°C)
2012 16th April (-1.5°C)
2011 19th March (-2.9°C)
2010 21st April (-1.2°C)
2009 30th March (-0.8°C)
2008 15th April (-0.8°C)
2007 30th March (-2.5°C)
2006 11th April (-1.4°C)

Given that I am situated low down on the valley floor surrrounded by hills (and on a sandy soil), these figures aren't too bad. I suspect more elevated positions nearby record their last frost earlier than I do.

My latest last air frost was -1.0C on 26th April 1989.

It is not that unusual to have the last air frost in April but I can't see that happening this 'winter season'.

What is extraordinary is that here in Wembury we have had only one air frost this winter.
The first, and apparently the last air frost of -1.2C, occurred on 26th Nov 2013.

The previous minimum number of air frosts was in 2006-2007 when we only had 5.

It has been a crazy winter what with the excess rain and gales.
