This big Atlantic low is forecast to bring a 35' swell into the SW approaches by Saturday, and a 20'+ wave onto Cornish beaches by Sunday http://magicseaweed.com/Sennen-Surf-Report/4/ . A huge swell coinciding with big tides and low pressure makes an interesting cocktail.

UPDATE 15/12 The large swell's arrived now. The breakwater is still working - sort of. Boats pulled right up http://www.sennen-cove.com/harbourcam.htm

David Braine said this low pressure system now covering the whole of the North Atlantic is the largest he has ever seen.

How unusual is it to have an Atlantic depression that extends from Canada to eastern Europe, and from Iceland down to north Africa?

I'm not sure it's that rare. Just 3 or 4 minutes keying in random autumn/winter dates threw up http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/20 ... 021126.gif

I think the difference this time is that there has been essentially a single centre, rather than a few rotating around each other.
