RMetS SE Centre meeting - relevant to COL

‘Well weather is not a girl thing is it?’ Gender and amateur meteorology

Dr Georgina H Endfield and Dr Carol Morris
School of Geography, University of Nottingham

Although there is a growing scholarship on the history of amateur meteorology it has overlooked questions of gender relations in this field. This presentation is based on recent research that begins to address this gap. Interviews with members of the most important amateur meteorological network in the UK - the Climatological Observers Link (COL) – provide the primary data. The research identifies a predominantly male bias within amateur meteorology in the UK, both historically and in its contemporary forms, and offers some insight into how and why this bias has emerged. Members of COL will be particularly welcome!
