Autumnal feel - 11 August

Postby Stephen Burt » 2014 Aug 12, 21:48

Today was the first day since 30 June that the screen maximum failed to reach 20°C here - a run of 42 consecutive days at or above 20.0°C, yet none of which reached 29°C.

Today was also the third consecutive day with thunder heard - a rarity in recent years, we've had four days this month already (and 15 this year so far - already the most thundery year since 2006, even if there's no more to come before January).

This evening's short thunderstorm pushed the August total rainfall to date to 56 mm - just surpassing the 1981-2010 normal of 55 mm for the month. Everything is looking remarkably green for mid-August!

Just made it past 20C, reaching 20.2C yesterday, meaning a run of 36 days and counting for days>20C here in Farnborough (since July 9th). We have only had one thunder day this month so far (compared to 4 in July) but rainfall is at 30.2mm. I have had a break from watering the garden! It shows how in these conditions rainfall can vary widely from place to place. Yesterday I spent the evening in Bracknell, where a thunderstorm occurred at 7pm with a downpour lasting around 20 mins. But in my gauge back in Farnborough I had only 0.9mm!

My run of >20C days came to and end today with a max of 19.4C. 37 consecutive days had >20C here, from July 9th - August 14th.
