And here....

1st 20.1°C
2nd 22.1°C
3rd 23.4°C
4th 22.5°C
5th 23.0°C

My records only go back to 2005 but since then the warmest September was 2006 (mean = 16.7°C) but it had no really warm or hot days. My highest September temperature was in 2011 with 27.2°C on the 29th, that was the start of a remarkable 'heatwave' that lasted until the 4th October.

Looking back through all the Septembers since 2005, one thing stands out is the persistence of the warmth for the first 3 weeks, i.e., day maximum temperatures predominantely and consistently above 20C then a sudden cooling during the final week of the month - the end of summer proper and the start of autumn. Though the odd day above 20°C do still occur in October.

In 2007 there was a reasonable run of warm days but nearly all the Septembers have such warm 'runs' with 2008 really being the only exception.

September 2007
1st 20.5°C
2nd 20.4°C
3rd 20.4°C
4th 23.0°C
5th 23.5°C
6th 24.4°C
7th 25.1°C
8th 25.9°C
9th 19.9°C
10th 20.9°C
11th 22.8°C
12th 19.4°C
13th 22.0°C
14th 18.5°C
15th 21.7°C
16th 20.4°C

Max 20.6 C here today after a very damp start with heavy dew and low thin stratus.

Climatologically, September is a nicer month than August here in terms of dryness.

4 of the last 6 Augusts have had well above average rainfall (>100 mm).

It is the same here Nick, temperature starts to drop in the last week of September more often than not.

Aye Len, my average September rainfall since 2005 has been 47.1 mm, this makes it the second driest month behind April (25.0 mm).

My very estimated LTA (1981 - 2010) also shows September's relative dryness which compares well with driest months (June, July & August). The 'rains' arrive in October with nearly a doubling of the average monthly rainfall.

Since 2005 my October average rainfall has been 106.4 mm; what a contrast to 'drought' of September.

Nothing like 20 degrees up here, the air maximum so far is 19.5C on day 3, the mean maximum so far is 17.5C with an anomaly of -0·1c.

MEAN MIN: 12·5°C

MEAN MAX: 17·5°C

MEAN: 15.0°C (Anomaly -0.1°C)

It would be nice for a warmer spell before Autumn kicks in.

Richard, sorry to say but the summer warmth continues here with a maximum of 24.1°C yesterday and 23.4°C today. Very calm conditions and high(ish) DPs (around 17°C to 18°C for the last couple of days) made it feel warmer than it actually was. With the off shore SSTs at 19°C (warmer nearer the shore), a swim in sea was called for this afternoon (definitely no wetsuit required).

The sunshine was very hazy at times and despite it shining for most of the day after a misty start until mid-morning, only 7.2 hours was recorded. As I've said above, current weather/temperature is nothing unusual for early/mid September.

September 2014 averages for the first week (1st - 7th):
Mean minimum = 11.5°C
Mean maximum = 22.7°C
Mean = 17.1°C
Rain = 0.0 mm
Sunshine = 31 hours.

Forecast looks good for the rest of the week.

September warmth continues with rather consistent daily maximum temperatures and lots of sunshine lately though the nights have cooled down a little.

Max Sun
1st 20.1°C 0.4 hrs
2nd 22.1°C 1.3 hrs
3rd 23.4°C 4.8 hrs
4th 22.5°C 9.6 hrs
5th 23.0°C 2.4 hrs
6th 24.1°C 4.8 hrs
7th 23.4°C 7.2 hrs
8th 22.6°C 12.4 hrs
9th 23.6°C 12.4 hrs
10th 21.9°C 12.3 hrs
11th 22.3°C 10.1 hrs

1st - 11th
Mean minimum = 10.6°C
Mean maximum = 22.6°C
Mean = 16.6°C
Rain = 0.0 mm
Sunshine = 78 hours.

No rain since the 29th of August. This warm and sunny spell is working wonders with the grapes that are nearly ready to pick with a very high sugar content; should be a vintage year! The veggie plot has done wonders this summer with all crops doing incredibly well. The toms, cucumbers and chillies have been fruiting since July and I still cannot pick them fast enough. Even the more temperamental and fussy aubergines have fruited well. Have been picking figs for the last couple of weeks but this year the olive tree dropped all of its fruits very early around the end of July. The only explanation I have is that it is a young tree with poorly established roots and the soil was very dry. Apart from that, a summer to remember and I think overall the best one since 2005.

Mean max/min from 1st - 13th at Farnborough: 21.2, 11.9 (both 2.0C above the estimated LTA).

Only one day with rain (the 1st) with a rain total of 5.9mm.

The (estimated) sunshine has been close to normal here. There have been spells of dull weather, but on most days the sun has managed to break through.

Maybe Hurricane Edouard (well, tropical storm, but will be a hurricane soon) will do the same as Cristobal and push the jet stream northwards, extending our late summer weather...
