Penzance 17th/18th Exceptionally warm night.

Postby Graham Easterling » 2014 Sep 18, 07:52

The 17th saw a mainly cloudy though bright, dry, warm & very windy afternoon. Gusts to around 45mph at Land's End, > 50mph at St Ives.

In Penzance the sun was often visible through the frontal cloud, but rarely strong enough to give distinct shadows. Despite this and the F5-6 onshore wind it still reached 21.2C. Indications of rain on the radar but not 1 drop of rain in the gauge, still only 0.9mm this month. (on 1st)

The really interesting weather occurred during the evening, with some exceptional temperatures for mid September. The temperature dipped to 19.4C during the early evening, then at 21:30 it was back to 20C! The Island, St Ives, reported 20.2C at the same time, only 0.4C below the days maximum and the wind was still gusting > 45mph. Camborne & St Mawgan were also reporting 20C at 22:00. Out in the Atlantic off Land's End Sevenstones bouy was reporting 19C with a MEAN wind speed of 26kt.

The night of 17/18 September saw a minimum of 17.6C, the warmest September night in Penzance for 10 years and the 2nd warmest night of 2014.

Update. 18th - Very similar temperatures to 17th, but much, much less wind. Noon yesterday at Sennen it was gusting >40mph, with mean speeds in the high 20s. If you ventured onto the beach you'd be sand blasted. Today at noon 21C or so and just a F3, a totally different sort of day. It also meant a small but clean wave. Attached pictures taken at noon when I dashed out to Sennen after realising it was much less windy than predicted and there might be a useable wave.

Maximum in Penzance, so far 21.5C - Some attractive altocumulus castellanus now developing.
