29th Dec 2014 - V. Cold Night & V. High Pressure

Postby Nick Gardner » 2014 Dec 29, 11:40

A very cold night (for here) with a minimum this morning of -5.6°C and a grass minimum of -8.9°C.

The minimum temperature was reached at 04:45 then a 'stronger' land breeze set in from the north and prevented the temperature dropping any further.

The air pressure peaked at 10:30 this morning with 1042.6 hPa making it the highest pressure in my record beating the previous 1042.1 hPa on the 26th November 2013.

It was interesting to note that on the cliff tops yesterday overlooking the sea and despite a stiff north-easterly wind, there was frost in the shade which did not melt all day. The air temperature maximum was between 7°C and 8°C.

It was -4.6C last night in Farnborough, so even colder in Devon, Nick! Lowest was at 0815 here, just after sunrise.

The barometer here is 1042.1 and still rising.

It's interesting that ground/grass frost persists in the shade even though the air temp is >0 (or even as high as 7). It's to do with heat balance - the outgoing radiation to a clear sky offsets the conduction from the warmer air. On occasion, I have seen it become overcast, the air temp remains the same, but the frost melts.

Even colder last night, -5.3C. That is the lowest temperature of 2014 (tonight is unlikely to be that cold).
