More large hailstones in Stornoway....

Postby Eddy Graham » 2015 Jan 02, 12:20

Folks, I'm sorry if it seems I have been dominating the 'Daily Discussion' forum a bit recently... but we've had yet another exciting and interesting event weatherwise this morning in Stornoway which I feel I should report: Large hailstones falling in a heavy squall (max diameter perhaps 1.0-1.3cm or so; much larger than the more common pea-sized 0.5-1.0cm large hail that usually falls and that they were mixed in with). I didn't notice any thunder, but the sound of the clattering hail was loud enough by itself (there are some sferic reports in the vicinity). Here are some pictures & a link to a video I made of the event:

The sky itself at morning observation time this morning was truly magnificent, with huge c. congestus towers, cb. mamma in anvils, cirrus radiatus and c. intortus , very fresh and invigorating!

with best wishes for 2015 (and perhaps hoping that the weather will quieten down here somewhat soon!)
