Record January temperature this evening - 9 January 2015

After a mild day with spells of sunshine, the temperature has risen to record levels in the Reading area this evening - accompanied by a near-gale force WSW wind gusting above 40 kn.

The maximum temperature during daylight here was 12.9°, at 1317 - already mild. But after dark this evening the temp has risen further, particularly rapidly just before 1800 UTC. At 1900 UTC the screen temperature reached 14.8°C, which equals the highest January temperature on record (on 9 January 1998) for sites south of Reading on a record back to 1917.

Even more extraordinary, the AWS at the University (10 km NE of here) reached 15.5°C at 1748 UTC. The University has records back to 1908, and the highest temperature recorded in January on that 107 year record stood at 14.7°C, also on 9 January 1998. Since 1908, 14°C has been attained only six times in January in Reading, but no January day has previously reached 15°C - until this evening.

As I write, the temperature is still 14.2°C and the wind gusting almost 40 kn - the air outside feels like a sauna. We've lost power once already this evening.

21Z maximum of 15.7 at St James Park, so I'm told. That'll confuse the SYNOP max / min returns!

15C was expected as a day max 06-18h from about 4 days ago - at least this will show up in the clim. returns.

Following the very high temperatures yesterday evening, I've spent a little time this morning trying to ascertain what the highest January temperature on record for southern England is.

The highest January temperatures are well known, and mostly fohn-related in North Wales - not relevant to southern England of course.

The highest I can find in England away from fohn effects are:

15.6°C (60°F) at Bath and 15.0°C (59°F) at Greenwich on 19 January 1930 (16.1°C, 61°F at Sealand, nr Chester on the same day) - January highest on the Greenwich record to that date (MWR)
15.0°C at Wokingham on 9 January 1998 (COL bulletin)
17.4 °C at East Malling in Kent on 27 January 2003 (source below)

The latter was described on the Met Office climate summary that month (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/ ... 03/january) as 'probably ... the warmest January day in England on record', so I suspect there are none higher.

I also imagine nowhere reached 17.4°C yesterday, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong! Any takers?

The mercury rose to bang on 15.0c yesterday evening, not a record I'm sure, but still exceptional for January.

Temperature read 14.8c at midnight, and has today fallen under clear skies.

Currently 5·1c at 1700 UTC.

The highest I can find is 16.1C at Yeovilton and Pershore - while
Exeter Airport had 16.5C. Oak Park in Ireland had 16.2C.

Yesterday's max in Farnborough was 14.5C, so 1.0 less than Reading University. The time of my max was 2030 (whereas at the university it seemed to be just before 1800, according to the graph). At both my site and the university it seems that there was a marked increase in wind speed at the time of the max, though not a significant change in wind direction - just veering slightly to W from WSW.
