Coldest night of month so far

Postby greg_gruner » 2015 Feb 22, 20:30

Last night fell to -3.8C here in Farnborough, the coldest night of February so far and the 13th air frost of the month. This was after hail showers fell yesterday. Some of the hail had not melted, so in my rain gauge I found not only the water frozen in the bottle, but some frozen hail in the funnel.
Today was all change as an Atlantic front moved in. I observed a 22 degree halo around the sun at 1030 as the warm front approached. Rain started around 1330 and has continued pretty much since then, though now more drizzly. Also quite a strong SSW wind, and milder now (7.4C at 2030).

Greg It's been miserable weather up here in Stornoway for the past week or more (after a hint of spring earlier in the month):
Heavy snow yesterday (Sat) morning for more than an hour (with large flakes estimated to 4-5cm in width, but it didn't lie for long). Last night (Sat 21st night), the temp fell to -1.0C early in the night, only to rise to +4C this morning in a howling SSE gale with heavy driving rain till 2pm. A sunny clearance followed briefly, only for heavy large hail showers to move in this evening (lying, with an air temp of +1C at the moment).
Past week (Sun 15th-Sun 22nd): A waterlogging 84.5mm of rain!
And just 4 air frosts for Feb so far (but also 4 days of snow lying)

And thunder today / with temporary powercuts, but the wind is light (as we are near the 'eye' of the low), air pressure is only 958hPa this evening
