1st July 2015 - Exceptionally Warm Night

Postby Nick Gardner » 2015 Jul 01, 18:32

Last night the temperature hovered between 21°C and 23°C from midnight until 05:00 before cooling down a little. The minimum temperature of 19.8°C was reached at 07:15, this being the highest minimum temperature I have recorded here in the Otter Valley since I set up my weather station in May 2005.

Being rurally situated and on the valley floor with hills either side, this place is not conducive to warm nights. Another interesting thing about last night's temperature was that it reached a peak of 23.2°C at 04:20, this being higher than the temperature for most of yesterday, only being exceeded from 16:20 to 18:25 with the peak occurring with 24.1°C at 18:00.

The graph below shows the temperature from my Davis AWS recorded at 5 minute intervals:

The minimum last night was 20.1C, followed by a max today of 33.3C. A few degrees lower than the new UK July max of 36.7C at Heathrow, but still very hot.
It is still 26.2C now (2025z)!

A very warm night at my location with the overnight air minimum falling to 20.4°C at 04:38hrs, a sunny and increasingly hot and humid day followed with the air temperature even reaching 28.9°C by 09:00hrs. The day’s maximum air temperature of 32.9°C was recorded at 15:14hrs with a Relative Humidity of 33.7%. (The lowest Relative Humidity value for the day occurred at 15:18hrs, 31.2%).
Charlwood, my nearest MO site recorded 33.0°C at 1500 but I see from Roger Brugge's summary page Charlwood actually had a day maximum of 34.1°C

(09hrs = 28.9°C/45.4%, 12hrs = 29.5°C/41.9%, 15:14hrs 32.9°C/33.7%, 18:00hrs = 29.2°C/44.5%, 21:00hrs = 22.3°C/70.5%)

The minimum of 16.5c here was not particularly noteworthy, not even making the top 20 highest minimum values, but the maximum of 30.6c on the 1st was the second highest on record for any month since this site opened in 1977; the highest was 31.7c on August 3rd 1990.
It's only the third time that 30c has been reached here ( both the others were in August 1990) but it's likely that this value was just exceeded on one occasion in both August 1975 and July 1976. I was recording at a nearby but much lower site in those days and the data from that station would indicate a maximum of about 30.3c in August 1975 and 30.2c in July 1976.
The value on July 1st is all the more remarkable in that it occurred with no long build up of heat.
