Winter drought

Postby Len Wood » 2013 Dec 10, 16:30

Have only had 2.5 mm rain in the last 19 days.

The last significant rain period here was 18-21st November when we had 11.7 mm.

Seems unusual for this time of the year.

... similar here Len: around that period (18th-21st Nov.) we had even less (6.3 mm), and over the past 30 days (ending 11/09Z), the total rainfall has been 7.2 mm - the last few mornings I've been entering 'trace' (measured) due to heavy dew and/or wet fog.

In Penzance:-

30 day running rainfall total now 17.9mm, 9.6mm of which fell in some heavy rain/hail showers on 19/20 November.
20 day running rainfall total now 3.6mm

Probably just as notable is the fact that the average barometric pressure @ 09:00, over the last 20 days, is 1032mb.

So that was basically a 3 week drought ended on 13 Dec with 9.2 mm.

That is 11.7 mm for December so far.

With 119 mm as an average for the month there is a way to go yet.

The forecast charts for the second half of December though seem to promise a lot of rain.

We'll see how close to average we get here on the south coast of Devon.

Here in Farnborough:
0.7mm in the 21 days Nov 21st - Dec 12th
6.2mm in the 31 days Nov 12th - Dec 12th

Mean pressure Nov 12th - Dec 12th : 1026.3 (reaching 1040.6 on Nov 26th).

It was certainly a period of dominant high pressure. But now it raining heavily as I write!
