Unexpectedly strong wind

Postby Dave Evans » 2014 Mar 15, 18:53

The W/NW wind increased to gale force yesterday evening with the mean speed at 350 mts reaching 44 mph by late evening and a maximum gust of 67 mph. The wind decreased to a strong breeze after midnight and for a time this morning but then increased again during mid-morning to reach a mean speed of 41 mph shortly before midday with a maximum gust of 61 mph.

The Met' Office had forecast a 'fairly warm and breezy day' This was a long way past breezy and it certainly did not feel warm with a maximum of 9.5c shortly before 1300 and the temperature between 7.5 and 8.5c for much of the day.

Further to the above, the wind increased once again yesterday evening and exceeded gale force from around 2200 until well into the early hours. The mean speed reached 43 mph and the maximum gust was 66 mph W/NW at 0327.
By 0900 the mean speed was down to 37 mph and it remained between 33 and 38 mph until late afternoon when there was a more significant decrease. There were frequent gusts exceeding 50 mph throughout the day and it was not until after 1630 that the gusts began to fall below 40 mph.
