Penzance - Rain, sleet, thunder, coldest day for a year

Postby Graham Easterling » 2014 Mar 27, 16:19

Lowest Max over the winter was 7.7C, highest so far today 6.0C @ 09:30ish.

It was below 5C from around 11:00 until 15:45. At 12:30 it was between 3.5C & 4C with heavy rain and sleet. Despite some bursts of sun around 14:50 it remained <5C, and 15:30-15:45 a thunderstom tracked E-W across Mount's Bay.

Unless the temperature rises above 7C late this afternoon, which currently seems unlikely, it will be the coldest day for a year, well since 29/03/13 when it reached 5.9C.

Graham, did you you get any late sunshine/warmer temperatures?

As with previous days, it has been a fairly sunny day here though there was a short, sharp downpour late morning that gave 3.6 mm. It seems we have missed the cloud/rain and the sun shone brightly for 6.5 hours today giving a maximum temperature of 9.3°C after an overnight minimum of 3.1°C.

Still, a maximum of just 9.3°C does make it one of the colder days of this winter and spring - showing just how consistently mild it has been.

March sunshine total now at 150 hours.

Max 10.7C here with plenty of sunshine albeit feeling chilly in the wind.

You seem to have drawn the short straw Graham in the last few days.
Monday was grim here but otherwise not too bad.

My lowest max for this winter was 5.8C on 30th Jan.

Nothing like the horrendous March of last year when I had a max of 2.6C on 26th.

Not really, a glimpse of the sun before dark when it reached 6.1C. However, I suspect it may well be warmer by 09:00 tomorrow when my 24 hour period ends, but still likely to be the lowest max all winter.

UPDATE It was indeed warmer by 09:00 today. Pleasant early sunshine resulted in a 09:00-09:00 max of 7.0C, still 0.7C colder than anything over the winter and the lowest max since 1/4/13 (6.7C).
