Frost - May 3rd

Postby greg_gruner » 2014 May 03, 10:38

Here in Farnborough last night's min was +1.4C, but a frost was visible on ground and cars (I don't have a grass min thermometer).
I expect quite a few places will have had an air frost.
Not unusual in early May, but my min of 1.4C was the lowest since March 27th.

The overnight minimum here was -1.3C, making it the lowest May temperature since my records began 25 years ago, and beating the previous minimum of -1.1C recorded on the 1st, last year. May frosts seem to have suddenly become more frequent here; just 3 recorded from 1990-2009, but now 3 in the last 5 years.

A slight air frost here this morning (screen min -1.0°C, grass min -3.8°C), but nothing particularly unusual for May here - we averaged 0.6 frosts in May over the 1981-2010 period, and air frost has been recorded as late as 9 June before now.

In May 2010, on 12th I recorded a screen min of -2.6°C and grass min -7.8°C, with extensive frost damage to garden plants and tree blossom.

(I had feared another chilly night tonight, but with a dense blanket of Cs now covering the sky that looks unlikely.)
