Poor forecast of coastal fog and low cloud

Postby Len Wood » 2012 May 29, 16:18

Yesterday's forecast via BBC Spotlight SW suggested much of the SW England would be plagued by low cloud and coastal fog today.
It has not happened. We have had wall to wall sunshine here and even in dear old Cornwall the low cloud dissipated.

This just goes to show how difficult low cloud cover is to forecast with a weak pressure gradient.
The forecasters have my sympathy.
I suppose they have to stick their necks out.

Dear old Cornwall, not so much of the old! Actually it was sunny around much of Penwith coast yesterday, the visibility along the north coast was good. The cloud was over the cliff tops & inland, many beaches were sunny. An ideal day for a tax free pasty & a pint.

UV forecast was a bit out on both days as well. 3 forecast for today, in fact it was at least twice that. See http://www.nrpbdev.org.uk/uv/uv_index.c ... n=Camborne . UV exceeded 8 on the last 2 days on St Martin's.

UPDATE. Fog still forecast for Penzance noon today (30th). After a cloudy start the cloud's now (noon) well broken now with good spells of warm sunshine.

It has been a real challenge for forecasters recently, with a weak jet stream, light winds, showers and the possibility of sea fog.
The Bank Holiday weekend fotrecast was initially quite positive, but it now looks as though an elongated low will move across the south on Saturday/Sunday, with its effects lingering till Monday in the south-east. Then another low moving in for Tuesday...
